Das goldene zehn Dollar Geldstück wird im amerikanischen Volksmund als "Eagle" bezeichnet. Als die Firma Columbia 1897 mit dem "Type B" einen Phonographen im Sortiment aufnahm, der nur 10 Dollar kostete, nannte man ihn werbewirksam "Eagle". Bald wurde diese von jedermann erschwingliche Sprechmaschine zum Verkaufsschlager und von unzähligen Herstellern kopiert. Besonders die Französische Firma "Pathé Frères" baute viele ihrer Phonographen nach diesem Muster.

Pathé bot im ersten Katalog von 1898 noch einen "Graphophone Eagle" der Columbia an. Berits zwei Jahre später findet man das genau gleiche Modell im Katalog als "Graphophone Aiglon", und auf dem Holzdeckel ist von nun der Hahn als Markenzeichen abgebildet.

Der "Aiglon" hat eine Spindelführung und erlaubt deshalb Aufnahme und Wiedergabe von Phonographen-Walzen. Beim Ankauf des Gerätes war kein originaler Trichter dabei. Ich habe es nachträglich mit dem roten Karton-Trichter ausgerüstet, der ursprünglich zum Pathé Phonographen "Coq" gehörte.

In it's catalogue from 1897, Columbia wrote about one of it's finest achievements: "The Eagle Graphophone is the successful result of experiment and expended upon the problem of producing a talking machine that will reproduce as loudly and clearly and with as pure a tone as the best talking machine, and which at the same time can be sold at a popular price. No talking machine was ever before offered at so low a price".

Originally, this phonograph was sold for 10 Dollars and was named after the eagle, which is stamped on ten Dollars gold pieces. Since the purchase of a case was an option, this model often turns up in cases not designed by Columbia, especially in Europe, where importers were inclined to build inexpensive cases themselves in order to save transportation costs on machines from U.S.

A winning combination of simplicity and reliability, it would be copied repeatedly for the next ten years by firms the world over, particularly by the French Pathé company. In Pathé's 1898 catalogue was still listed one "Graphophone Eagle" and already two years later we find at the same place the model "Graphophone Aiglon" with Pathé's trade mark on the lid, the rooster singing in front of a phonograph.

This phonograph is fitted with an original and very rare red paper horn with diameter of 4 ½".
